Master Class – Exploring backbends, with Marina Jung
Wednesday September 23, 6 – 8am
Thursday September 24, 6 – 8am
Friday September 25, 6 – 8am
Yoga West is delighted to host this 3-session Master Class on exploring backbends,
with Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher Marina Jung.
Backbends are an advanced practice and Marina expects students to have at least 5 years of Iyengar Yoga experience.
A commitment to attending all three days is required, to allow careful preparation and progression into the depths of the practice.
In 1991, BKS Iyengar ran a backbends intensive in Pune, India. He was interviewed at the time by Patricia Walden and Victor Oppenheimer. Mr Iyengar commented:
“The human structure is such that the spinal vertebrae can be moved backward as well as forward and sideways, without causing injury. Backbends are not poses meant for exhibitionism. Backbends are meant to understand the back parts of our bodies. The front body can be seen with the eyes. The back body cannot be seen; it can only be felt.“
“When we speak of the extension of the spine in backbends, it is the anterior layer of the spine which elongates, not the posterior. When you do forward bends, you are creating space on the posterior vertebral column of the spine. When you twist, you are creating room or space on the lateral parts of the spine, but there are no movements to extend or expand the interior portion of the spinal vertebrae except backbends. The anterior extension of the spine is unknown. The moment you start the backbends you are in unknown territory. Your body may be known, but your inner spine is unknown, you are entering the unknown world.”
